Yang Xinhao is the five-year-old son of Yang Yukui, a farmer in Heilongjiang Province’s Tieli City. He had widespread swelling of his lymph nodes as a result of the Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine he received at a local hospital in the first few months after his birth. The Huludao City’s Bureau of Health maintains that this was the result of a medical accident.

In April of this year, Yang Yukui and his wife took their son to see a doctor at Beijing Children’s Hospital. The hospital confirmed that “the lymph nodes beneath the left armpit were improving.” Because they were dissatisfied with this vague diagnosis, the couple got into a dispute with the hospital workers.
