WEBINAR FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE FUTURE RULE OF LAW WAS
HELD SUCCESSFULLY BY THE SOCIAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITIES NETWORK
On November 18, 2020, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Future Rule of Law
Webinar, which was one of the “AI+” serial webinars, was held successfully online by
the Social Sciences Universities Network (SSUN), with the assistance of Renmin Law
School and Renmin Law and Technology Institute of Renmin University of China
(RUC).
The SSUN was launched together by Renmin University of China (RUC) and Luiss
University in 2019, to provide a collaboration platform between universities of
humanities and social sciences in talent training, scientific research, academic innovation,
and policy/regulation formulation. In 2020, to successfully meet the opportunities and
challenges brought about by AI, RUC and Luiss University, together with other SSUN
member institutions, held a webinar series centered on AI and its relationship with big
data technology, the law, public governance, and the digital economy.
The webinar invited Prof. Ivar Hartmann from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) Law
School, Associate Prof. Guo Rui from RUC Law School, and Prof. Daria S. Boklan, Prof.
Fuad T. Aleskerov, and Dr. Olga Chetverikova from the National Research University
Higher School of Economics to deliver keynote speeches. Prof. Cheng Lei, Vice Dean of
Renmin Law School, also attended the webinar and delivered the welcome speech.
Associate Prof. Zhang Jiyu, Executive Director of the Law and Technology Institute of
RUC, moderated the webinar.
Vice Dean Cheng first expressed his thanks and greetings to all the speakers and the
audiences, particularly regarding their overcoming the difficulties of the COVID-19
pandemic to attend the webinar. He expressed his belief that the webinar would
contribute to solving the problems of AI and the law. Finally, Vice Dean Cheng
announced that he eagerly anticipated having face-to-face communication with and
cooperation between all the researchers once the COVID-19 pandemic was over and
wished the webinar great success.
The topic of Prof. Hartmann’s presentation was the Three Elements of the Future Role
of AI in the Law. First, he introduced the curriculum setting and reform of FGV Law
School, aiming to improve the core competencies of students. In this way, Prof. Hartmann
introduced “Capacity Building” as the first element. Thereafter, he demonstrated the
